Bullet GUITAR
  Matt Buttermann
Matt is a guitarist/composer/educator in the New York City area. His love for music began like many guitarists—after hearing Jimi Hendrix for the first time, he immediately picked up a guitar and began learning as many Hendrix songs as possible. Then the music of guitar greats Joe Pass and Wes Montgomery changed his view of guitar and opened his eyes to jazz. Matt has since combined his love of classical music, jazz, and classic rock into a passion for all music throughout his career as a performer and educator.

Matt has been featured at jazz festivals throughout the United States with many renowned jazz artists, including Larry Coryell, Alex Han, Brice Winston, James Moody, and Todd Williams. Since moving to New York City in 2004, he has been an active performer in jazz clubs around the city, having performed at venues like Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and the Jazz Standard, with artists such as Wycliffe Gordon, Phil Woods, Clark Terry, Rich Perry, and Jimmy Heath, among others.

As an educator, Matt has taught both private guitar students and in various public schools around NYC, including jazz performance at the famed Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. In addition to hands-on teaching, Matt frequently works with Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Smithsonian Institute on many educational programs. As a way of bringing performance and education together, he founded the Prescott Jazz Celebration in 2005 in his hometown of Prescott, Arizona, featuring internationally acclaimed jazz artists in a four-day event of performances and free workshops.

Matt has studied with Peter Bernstein, Lionel Loueke, Gene Bertoncini, Mulgrew Miller, Armen Donelian, and James Chirillo. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance and Music Education from the City College of New York and a Master’s in Jazz Studies from William Paterson University.
